I keep getting "this drive is currently in use, please close any programs etc..." error when trying to remove any of my usb flash drives, no matter which usb port I use.
Does anyone have any idea of a solution for this please? Thanks

Sorry: I'm using Windows 7 64bit Professional, and pc spec is in sig. ;)

I get this once in a while after using my external HDD to take a system image. Not sure what the issue is tbh so will keep an eye on this thread. Sorry I don't have the answer..

Hmm ok, interesting, as I too made a system image to an external drive a while back. Thanks for the input anyway and hopefully someone else will know... for both our sakes :)

Yes, there'll be something in the background.

I have this problem whenever I email an attachment which was on the flash drive through Outlook - am never allowed to safely remove the drive. It usually gets pulled out anyway...

although you might not be conscious of any running programs accessing the drive, it's very likely something in the background is.

Well this is what I thought and I can't figure out what it could be.

I have a Genie Timeline program that monitors drives and runs back ups and that is not monitoring the usb drives, my drive meter gadget doesn't either and none of my media programs are set to sync with usb's.
I've looked through the processes list and I can't see anything that stands out to me.

What else could it be? Because its doing my head in...

Can I get a list up showing my indexed drives etc? As it doesn't seem to be an option in the usb drives properties like on hard drives and ssd's.

I've checked my antivirus, plus I haven't changed from avast for years and i've never had this issue until recently.

there's even a portable version so you don't have to install it.

Yeah thanks I tried the program, but it just comes back and I dont want to do this every time I remove the usb. I'd like to figure it ot and stop it all together you know.
Thanks though!

that was the whole point of me posting it. did it not tell you?

Hi sorry I was really tired yesterday and I obviously want thinking! lol

Yeah it showed my genie timeline backup program but it is not set to monitor my usb drives. I think I am going to uninstall/reinstall it and see if that stops it.

Thanks again. I'll let you know.

Hi yes to update, it turned out that something was wrong with the drive monitoring with Genie Timeline. It never used to do this so something must have gone wrong with it. Uninstalled and reinstalled and it still errored out.
Anyway got a different auto back up program called Todo Backup Free and its now fine! :D Sorted!
I can now remove all USB drives with out any errors or hesitation.

Thanks for the suggestins guys and I hope that this helps somebody :)

Try restoring from a previous save.

Everyone should safely remove rather than just pull out.
Happened to me and I had to reinstall windows. 1 out of 1000 problems but what a pain. I asked a service centre and he said there has been quite a few problems with people not doing it....ie moer that people envisage.

We still talking about USB sticks here? :D

Yes we are! Upon safe removal of usb drive I was getting an error saying it was busy. But like I said I descovered it was my auto back up software.
It was doing something it wasnt set to do so I had to get rid of it.

Annoying, but got there in the end at least! :)

And yes Philtor I got the joke I just chose to recap instead. *honest!* :( lol
