USB Thumbdrive crash

My A64 4000+ runs fine at 2.88 Ghz, with my OCZ value RAM cunning at 205 MHz - so not too stressed. Prime95, snm, memtest, 3D games all run fine, no crashes.

HOWEVER, I have twice had a problem when my 512MB thumbrive has been in the front USB port, the system has rebooted. Not doing anthing stressful - the 1st time I was checking some files on the thumbdrive, the 2nd time I was just browsing the net.

The 1st crash screwed my install - it did wierd stuff so I returned the overclock to stock for a few weeks. I used the thumbdrive in this time no probs.

Just done a fresh install and used the tumbdrive to transfer some files and that's when my 2nd crash happenned. Thought I caught a glimpse of a BSOD but it just reset before I could read anything.

Any ideas? Is there a log of BSOD messages anywhere on my system?

cheers.

In the Control Panel -> System -> Advanced Tab - Start And REcovery - you can turn off automatic restart - so the error is displayed until you cancel it I think - also details here of logging that might occur.

Don't know if this helps

"Although, overclocking is often part of the problem, (setting the FSB to a higher value increases the speed of the PCI bus to a value greater than default, the increased speed often causes USB to choke"

Although the PCI bus on my Epox board should be locked. I wondered about power - but then it would be under for more extra load when my x1900xt is in 3d

lol i would have gone for the bus being fast but if its locked.. then rofl.. usb thumbdrive crashing windows. I can only laugh :p
Um what about other usb appliances? try some different usb thing's under the same conditions that the usb thumbdrive was see what happens?
