So a friend asked me to look up some laptops for him and
ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 15 G533QS NVIDIA RTX 3080, 64GB, 15.6" FHD 300Hz, Ryzen R9-5900HX Gaming Laptop
we like the look of this one but it doesn't have a displayport socket, is this normal?
He wants to run an external monitor when he's not on the move and has a 2k screen that runs 165hz so ideally needs displayport unless the USB Ports:
1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C support DisplayPort™ / power delivery

means it can run a usb to displayport cable at the full speed and resolution?

Honestly a bit behind on this, I assumed that displayport would be a normal port for a high end laptop.

Quite common as USB-C can do multiple functions such as display out or power in/out so saves on ports. HDMI is there as it provides more compatibility with external displays such as Projectors/TVs.

Perfectly normal to only see USB-C and HDMI on modern gaming laptops. A few have mini-DP but they are few and far between.

As long as the USB-C supports DisplayPort alt mode it can provide a video out via a USB-C to DisplayPort (or HDMI) cable. I am using the former on my Legion 7 and it is quite happy running 3440x1440 @ 144Hz with G-sync.
