I have been trying to find out if there is a way to convert usb to firewire. I have a laptop that has no pcmcia slots or firewire connections, just usb.

I know the 2 are completely different, but if you can do usb to parralel and rs232 etc why not firewire?

i found this on ebay (well i found a few doing the same thing)

there was a similar looking cable on amazon and everyone says it just doesnt work, but if they are making them surely there must be a way to get them to act like a normal firewire connection.

I am wanting to capture video from a camcorder.

if anyone knows of a way or if this works that owuld be amazing :)

cheers.

iam sure there isnt a way to do what you are asking, perticuarly with a very simple wire what that looks like...

I remember years ago looking for something similar - found nothing

One or two places but both seemed dodgy and lots of negative feedback on it.

Sure i read somewhere in an article it was impossible to do.

Plain physical adapter isnt enough.
There would have to be active powered circuitry doing all kind conversions and control to data...
If that's even possible: Firewire relies to connected device and controller to manage data transfer independently while USB needs CPU to control transfer and everything. (which makes bandwidth and latencies uncertain handicapping theoretically faster USB2 seriously behind Firewire in real performance)
And especially DV/HDV camcorders need that guaranteed performance and certain functions.

See if you can find a Port Replicator (Google) for your laptop model or a USB port replicator with a firewire connection. (It is not guaranteed to work but might be worth trying if you have a local computer store).

The cable above will NOT work.

Failing that capture the footage on a PC with a firewire and copy and work on it on your laptop.

thanks for all the replies, i was pretty sure already, and i had found that converter device that artaxerxes mentions.

It just seems insane that companies can make cables like the one i pictured even tho its obvious it cant work!

I just wish laptops would at least put a pcmcia port on as standard! would make like so much easier!!

oh well, time to fire up the pc then... meh
