USB Voltage Output

Is there any way to find out what voltage my USB ports output??
The reason I ask is that when I connect up my Maxtor Mini HDD it doesn't work properly and when I try to charge my SATNAV it wont charge anymore. I tried both on our laptop and they both work fine on there.

multimeter and stick one end on the 5v contact and the other end on the ground contact

itll be about how many watts it can handle, try using the usb ports directly on the motherboard with an extension cable if its front usb-ports.

The thing is they were working fine before. The only thing I can think of that might have caused this is that I connected another set of 4 USB ports to the motherboard for the back.
Could this have caused the problem??

yes it can. the ports can go into protection if you overload one. it happened to me when i tried to plug a camera and a bluetooth reciever in to the back o fmy xbox360 drive. for some reason it overloaded and shut every port on the board down.

cutting the power to the pc for a few seconds should be enough
