USB WiFi adapter - recomendations

I use a USB WiFi N adapter (TPlink WN821N) in our old laptops. But they stick out too much would like to swap them for something smaller. In the past the smaller one's had poor performance, so I stopped using them. Have you used any small usb wifi N adapter that you recommend. Cheaper the better.

Replace the internal one.

Anything mini pci, but that's an old laptop and it already comes with b/g/n so what sort of bandwidth do you need?
