USB Wireless Adapters

Bit of a noob with wireless networking - I want to set it up with my desktop and my g/fs laptop, the cheapest and simplest way to go for my desktop it seems is a USB pen-like adaptor rather than fitting a PCI card - are the USB adapters the same as PCI cards or are they limited in some way?

I used to use on on my desktop, it was fine. The advantage is you can position them for better reception than a pci card stuck in the back of your desktop.
