USB3 & USB2

I was just wondering about USB 3
I should bet getting a new laptop next week with usb3, I own an external hard drive which I keep files on games movies etc... But that external hard drive is usb2. So if I plug that external HDD into my new laptop which is usb3 and I want to transfer files from hdd to laptop will it transfer at usb3 speeds or usb2 speeds?

It will only work at usb2 speeds since the controller in the hard drive is only designed to run up to usb2 speed.
