So got another minor issue after going x99.
My usb 3 card reader is not playing nice
.
It's a Transcend rdf8 (http://www.transcend-info.com/Products/No-331).
Basically what happens is this. It picks up fine on the usb 3 and installs fine, so the ports are obviously working.
The problem is, when reading/writing to an sd card, it will randomly shut itself off. The blue light on it goes out (light is always on when plugged in and blinks during transfer) and it windows will pop up saying "cannot find location" or something like that. Then you have to unplug it and plug it back in. It will happily sit there all day, without issue if you are not doing anything. So it's not just randomly doing it, it's specifically when transferring.
It works fine on usb2.
Chipset drivers are all installed correctly far as I can tell. Having not been on intel for a long time, this is how it looks under device manager

Board is a GA-X99-SLI. Just incompatiblity with the controller? Looking around usb 3 problems between chipsets/devices seem fairly common, and not only on this board/gigabyte stuff.
Old board was using Asmedia as it's usb controller.
I don't have anything else that is usb 3 to try.
Edit:
Borrowed a Kingston usb3 memory stick. I tired it in the exact same port and it works 100% fine. Sat there copying stuff back and forth with no issues. Tried other ports as well and all is well with that usb3 device.
Chipset for the board says
Chipset:
4 x USB 3.0/2.0 ports (available through the internal USB headers)
8 x USB 2.0/1.1 ports (4 ports on the back panel, 4 ports available through the internal USB headers)
Chipset + Renesas® uPD720210 USB 3.0 Hub:
4 x USB 3.0/2.0 ports on the back panel
So does that mean the internal headers don't go through the renesas chipset? Backplates with 2 usb3 on are not expensive, so if that's the case, might try one of those incase it's the just the renesas part the card reader hates, but not sure if that's correct.
