Hey all

Here's the story.

Right now I've got my gaming rig, but come the end of the year I'll be building a new rig (in celebration of Battlefield 3).

Question is....what do I do with my current rig when the time comes to build the new one?...I don't really want to sell it :(

Here's an idea of the specs:

CPU: Intel i7 920
RAM: 6Gb DDR3 Corsair Dominator Ram (can't remember the speed 1333 or 1600)
Mobo: MSI Eclipse
GPU: GTX295
PSU: 1kw Zalman
HDD: 2x 1Tb Samsung spinpoint
Sound: X-Fi Fatal1ty Titanium
Case: Antec 902

Can you think of any use I could for with it?

Are you going to build a complete new rig?

Why not reuse elements of the old one (PSU, case, HDD etc) and then you can sell the rest individually to fund the new one.

Distributed computing projects? I use mine for that now when im not gaming on it. You could assist in something far greater than the individual and help figure out the collatz conjecture, or strive to find a model that best describes the state of the Milky Way, search for prime numbers or postulate on the densities and temperatures of optimal fusion within the bounds of reactors we have a shot at building in 20 years.

Or you could keep a door open with it.

Whatever.

I have thought about recycling some pieces. But I do love the feel of a new rig

Will more than likely keep the Sound Card and Hard Drives (use in NAS...)

The PSU has a loose capacitor (from what I read online) and produces a high pitched noise sometime. This will be NOT be recycled...if anything I might just get rid of it or keep it for backup in case the new one blows

Not a huge fan of the Mobo and the way MSI do the bios so I won't recycle that.

Case has far too many LED lights for me now...and it attracts dust. I'm looking at the SilverStone FT02B-W case, just makes me moist.

Set it up in another room and if you ever have a friend round, you can play some LAN games.

Now there's an idea I didn't actually think of haha :(

I looked at distributed computing (a few I did use to participate in) but the cost of the electricity bill .... i'm not sure how it'll effect my wallet

Why would you want a new one when your current one will still be better than 90% of PCs? If it's not powerful enough just upgrade the components that are slowing you down. I mean, no need to move house just because you want a new fridge...

If you're dead set on building a new one from scratch, selling it is the obvious answer. As for whether it's worth more as a whole or as components, I don't know.

It all depends on what tech is out around August/September time.

If the boost isn't worth it then yeah, I'll just upgrade certain parts. But if the boost is worth it I'll invest in more. I know it sound weird but I haven't built a computer in 2 years now (since building this) I'm getting itchy for it.

I guess I'll just save my cash up and see what is about at the time. If it's not worth buying a complete new rig then I might be able to drop money on a multiple GPUs or something

EDIT:

100% changing my case and PSU and investing in an SSD in a few months.

GPU will wait until BF3 is out.

Thanks all for helping me see sense

Definitely no need for a complete upgrade from your current setup.

Depending on budget, when the autumn rolls around I would get a new GPU and Case. You've already got a very quick CPU and 6GB of RAM is more than enough for gaming. Get a decent aftermarket cooler and push the CPU upto 4GHz. Would't be wasting money on a completely new setup.

You'll only need to change a couple of parts of that, CPU and RAM is fine....

Guess you could use it as a media pc if you wanted, but that depends on how loud it is...

Thanks to you guys on here I saw sense haha

I'm not gonna change much. When i'm back I'll be buying a new case/psu to fix annoyances, and checking the price of ssd to see if it's worth a purchase. Other than that I'll leave the GPU until just before the BF3 release and upgrade.

902 case is too loud for a media pc, but I might move the GTX 295 into a smaller shuttle case when I change it out (looking to hit some LANs so a good portable PC would be awesome).

Thanks again all for saving my money and sanity

Normally second pc means home server. That however would be a very electrically inefficient home server. Sell parts on, upgrade other parts, much as recommended above
