Use of mic in steam games, TF2 etc

I seem to be having real issues trying to get voice to work within all steam games, in this instance TF2 -

The microphone is correctly setup as the default in windows and it indeed does work in other games (with a 1.5 second delay).

Within TF2 via options / voice, it will allow me to test microphone and I'm able to hear myself fine (albeit with a 1.5 second delay which is equally annoying).

However if I try to test in game using the console command "voice_loopback 1" I do not hear anything.

I'm absolutely sure I have correctly setup the necessary ports, but if anyone has any ideas regarding this (and infact a reason for the delay which I get in all games I'd be very grateful).

Cheers, Paul.

EDIT Running on vista ultimate x64 (which hopefully won't make all the difference :)

I think the delay you experience when you test your mic is intentional so that you can hear yourself, otherwise it would just be an echo if it was played back immediately. If it works in there, then it should work in game. Just ask in a game if someone can hear you using the mic if you want to be sure.

Don't use your mic in game, it's just annoying.

eh? I think it's a lot better in TF2 when people talk. It is team fortress 2 after all, and working as a team is easier with communication..... Not everyone will be in the same vent after and it's good to hear what your team mates are planning so that you can help them even if you don't have a mic to communicate with.

They're annoying if you spam etc. If you actually use it properly it's much better and it's a lot better than typing, as that takes too long.

no, because I've noticed that most people that are tarding their voice down the line a)don't really know what's going on b)haven't really got a clue about team tactics and c)usually sound like castrated retards

When i game, i like to game, not to be told what to do, or where people are, I'd rather find out myself, this is one of the reasons i prefer bf2 over all mp valve games. In bf2 you can just run about with a squad, you know what to do, follow the person at the front and kill stuff on the way, in valve games the maps are so small you can just run around killing things, valve games are really not team based imo!

They are team games if you're playing as a team. Exactly the same can be said for BF2; it's almost entirely dependant on who you're playing with. I always have voice chat enabled, but this is because I play on a community server which has a group of regular players. Should some pre-teen come on and start raping the mic then I'll just mute him.

errrmmmm CSS & 1.6 possibly the biggest team based games ever?!

If you play on crap servers where only kids scream down the mic, find a better server? Some places they actually call out targets over the mic, which improves the gameplay a lot

Im sure theres a lot of clans that promote this, I havent played on 50klicks for ages but maybe there. I know www.tacticalgamer.com is especially good for comms

there's some decent TF2 pub servers where having people with mics on the team can make a massive difference..

shouting out that a sentry is down, or where the intel is, or where you saw a spy can help the team loads. Tbh, I've only had idiots use mics a few times, and usually they get kickbanned.
