Use unactivated iPhone as iTouch?

Sorry if this has been answered deep in the iPhone thread but I haven't been following it.

I am thinking about getting an iTouch, but then thought as the iTouch is almost identical to the iPhone just without the phone bits is it possible to buy the iPhone and just use it as an iTouch without activating it on O2?

The benefit of that being that if it's unlocked later on I can just put my phone sim in?

AFAIK, you'll have to "activate it" with iTunes before any use, so no.

You've got to activate it then unlock it and then use it as a phone w/o a contract - I think. Don't quote me on that tho...

No, it certainly does not work at all without activation. You can't use it as an Ipod or use any of the other features until it's activated. The options are to activate it officially (and get a 18 month contract at £35 or more per month), or try to use some unofficial method to unlock the phone.

yeah you can :)

not sure if the UK activation has been hacked yet!
but i managed to activate my US one without itunes/contract etc

It seems the OP wants to use the iPhone as an iPod Touch till O2/Apple allows unlocking later down the line, then he'll be able to use his current sim - without using any off the terms/condition methods.

To be honest I'd just wait. Rumours of 3G iPhones early next year.

Rumors. Highly unlikely after what Steve said, but I suppose it's possible :o

I'm thinking they may just bring them out mid next year (when everyone US, UK etc) is mid-way through their contract.

That way, they could just offer a £79 upgrade to the new handset and keep you tied in for another 18 months *contract would restart*

Who knows..

Im I missing something? but why would you want to buy an iPhone and then use it as a iTouch, i thought the iPhone was more expensive and was only available on contract?

They are obviously wanting to use it whilst the hacker community works on a hack. Once said hack is publically available.. BOOM.. unlocked iPhone, but with the iPod/maps/web usage imbetween purchasing and "using as a phone".

basically the iphone is a amazing but the contract is such a rip.
so if he buys it now, and activated it somehow he would have an ipod touch plus! ( he would pay more for it ) and later on if there is a unlocking solution he could have the phone too..

seems like some reasonable logic there

Which is exactly my plan, too :)

Considering Jobs said the iPod would never do video a year before the 5G was released, I would take anything he says with a cellar or two of salt ;).
And considering the fact that Quanta computer are currently manufacturing 2nd Gen iPhones, I wouldn't be overly surprised if we see them 1Q08 :).

Going to do just what the OP is planning. No unlock yet exists for the 1,1,2 firmware with the new bootloader. But with the release of unlocked out of the box phones in Germany, I'd say it's only a matter of time until it's hacked again. Thought there is a risk the hacking community might fail, or that the hack is a pain in the behind to use.

Luckily I'm off to NY in a few days, so I'll pick up a US phone for 2oo pounds, even if an unlock never comes out, I'll still have an 8gb touch for the same price I would have paid in the UK. I might even get lucky and get a iphone with version 1,1,1 on it, got have a dream I guess :)

How do you activate the iphone so that it's fully functional except you can't make calls? Is the activation a 2 step process (i.e. registration through itunes to activate the ipod etc), then purchase of the O2 rip off through itunes?

haha yeah i did hear that actually... but i am taking it with a massive bin bag full of salt
