How do you activate the iphone so that it's fully functional except you can't make calls? Is the activation a 2 step process (i.e. registration through itunes to activate the ipod etc), then purchase of the O2 rip off through itunes?

Essentially you downgrade to 1.1.1, and then reload 1.1..2

The end result is an iphone that you can't make calls from. I'm not sure if your interested, but there are hacks out there that allow you to use a UK iphone on a normal O2 tariff (pay as you go or contract), so you never have to sign up for the rip off iphone ones. You'll find all the details on the macrumors forums.

Good timing too, there should be unlock by February. if one is not available by then. it would be safe to assume it's never going to happen. So you can make an informed choice.
