I know this topic has been covered many times over but I am trying to do some research now for my brother and I am getting confused as to the best option.

We already have a Wii in the house so that doesn't need to be considered as an option.

In terms of what sort of games he will be playing it'll be more than likely just Fifa 2007, any driving game and a FPS. He has a PSP currently and an old PS2.

We don't have a HDTV here at the moment but he has just bought a Humax LDE 40A 40" HD LCD TV 1366x768.

I originally suggested he get a 360 but with all these scare stories about them failing after 12 months I'm not sure thats the best route to go.

Please can any one help with some advise. Thanks!

Anything can fail at any given time, i have both consoles and like them the same

At the end of the day he really wants to go down the high street have a go in a ps3 demo pod and a 360 1 and see what takes his fancy really.

If those are the genre's you like then it MUST be the Xbox360 you get.
I've had mine for launch and abused it ever since, still going strong!

Look at the games lineup of both consoles, as well as the releases over the next 6-12 months. Choose the one with the most games he would like to play.

I wouldn't let the reliability issue come into it.

A used PS3 would cost more than a new premium 360 bundle with Crackdown, Gears of war and GRAW2.

Get the 360 and you'll have the warranty and won't have anything to worry about.

Like XBox Live? Get the 360.
Like solitary play? Get a PS3.

What a load of nonsense tbh

Like laggy 8 player online, Pay your money for live
Like free, lag free up to 40 player online, get the PS3 :p

Personally i would get a new 360, as a used one would be a false economy unless you get a long warranty with it. Would be cheaper than a used PS3 anyway.

Troll. PSN is utter pants compared to XBL it cant even host a 2 player game of F1 without crashing and freezing and since I'm on a half decent connection (10mb) it should not do that.

Troll, roffles.

What is really funny is that F1 CE uses dedicated servers.

WTF.

You could not be more wrong about the Xbox Live part.

Maybe you're playing with people who have 128k connections still or idiots who try uploading on there PC's while trying to host a game.
I can host 16 people on R6:Vegas and nobody gets lag in the game and I'm only on a 10mb line currently with 500 or so upload.

Well neither could kreeeee!

Yeah right you have hosted a 16 player online match? that i seriously do not believe on a 500k upload.

Done and done.
Well actually I'm not sure if we're still on a 500k upload last time I checked it was that.

It's either 500 or 700 but I'm pretty sure it's only going up to 700 when we get 20mb upgrade on May 1st.

Actually JUMPURS is correct, multiplayer IS better on PSN purely because of dedicated servers, the inability to play with friends easily is what PSN lacks.

However, Xbox360 has the better games.

This whole PSN being lag free is just not true..

There are two factors
1. Player latency, no matter what infrastructure you have, if someone has a high ping (for whatever reason, downloading torrents etc while playing/in another country), they lag..
PS3 - I've had some terrible laggers on RfoM on the PS3.. it's been rubbish unless we just play people we know and trust.. then it's a great experience.
XBL The same applies to XBL.. the problem with XBL is that there are so many people, a lot are on another continent and have high latency and so your chances of playing with them increases, if I play against people I know who are in the UK, GoW/PGR3 etc are faultless

2. Servers - The Host of a game requires a large amount of bandwidth as they have to send data out to all other players including their own, clients only need to send/receive a smaller amount..
PS3 - RfoM has dedicated servers, which helps, but it can't magically make anyone with a high latency no lag..
XBL - Normally P2P connections, so the host player has to have the bandwidth to host, 256K is just about good enough for 6-8 Players, but any larger and you need more upstream, 16 player R6 is a push on my 832K upstream...

People saying PSN is lag free are just dreaming, it's all about network bandwidth and latency, there is nothing in the PSN network that can stop people with high pings from lagging. However I understand the sentiment, and with dedicated servers it does take away the requirement of the host to have a decent upstream connection speed..
However, with just a small amount of common sense XBL is as lag free as any other setup...

Oh, and isn't R6 on the 360 using dedicated servers, here's there 'fix' list for one of the 360 patches
" -Fixed a display error that showed 14 players instead of 16 for dedicated servers."...

Well if that is the state of the dedicated servers let me make my own, because I know it will be a damn sight better than that! Because it is fine on XBL.

I prefer Xbox Live, also you get a microphone with the premium but you have to buy one if you want to speak to others on the PSN. Also as for multi player gaming, Halo 3. It is going to rule!

I think you are clearly in the minority here, I have had nothing but lag-free smooth gaming. Xbox live is very hit-and-miss.

Maybe your in the minority then? I find Live to be 90% lag free so its hardly hit and miss....and dedicated servers do not stop lag.
