After being fairly unimpressed with the launch of the new AMD cards and probably not wanting to pay what it will cost to get a Vega I am looking at getting a used 980ti. Are there any particular models to be wary of getting 2nd hand, or any in particular to recommend?

I would recommend trying to pick up a used EVGA just for the fact that you are likely to have have warranty on one and you don't need anything from seller as you can use the guest RMA function.

EVGA for second hand. Ask for a screen cap or other proof that there is warranty remaining. You will be able to deal directly with EVGA for warranty if it's in it's first 3 years, regardless of who the original owner was.
