Used car with unwanted personal number plate

I am going to look at a car tommorow. The advert says that it has a personal number plate that is not included. What is the process to get the original one registered back to the car? Is there a cost in doing this?

It's up to the seller to sort that out before you buy it. They'll either have to transfer the private plate onto another car or put it onto a retention certificate at which point the car will be reassigned it's original plate.

Of course if the seller doesn't do this before you buy the car you'll get ownership of the plate as well
