Hi, Just after some advice please. I have a birthday coming up and the Mrs asks what I want. I didn't really have much in mind, maybe a GPU upgrade or new monitor. I would love to get a Vive or Rift CV1 but it's out my budget. I start looking around and reckon I could possibly get a used Rift DK2 with leap motion and a GTX970 for £500ish Although I enjoy my PC gaming I work away a lot and cannot really justify the cost of the retail VR's at the moment.

I mainly play Elite Dangerous, Tomb Raider and would love to try something like Project Cars.

What are your thoughts? Is it worth it as an intermediate step, is a development version going to cause me loads of hassle and will it have continued support for future games?

Thanks in advance

For me the biggest problem with the Vive and Rift and the only thing stopping me buying one is the low pixel density. It felt like plying a 640x480 or800x600 pixelated game on a large screen. The DK2 I believe is even lower resolution and worse.

I sold my Vive ultimately due to the resolution of the screens. I could live with the Fresnel lens flare and SDE (Screen Door Effect) as in native VR games they design around these limitations and once immersed you forget about it.

It was only when I tried to adapt non-native games or other uses that I started to notice the limitations and they ultimately became annoying. I couldn't imagine using the previous versions of the Occulus for example so I'd at least try to get a demo if you can to get a reference.

You could get a gfx card and wait for cheaper vr. Razer are making a modular open vr headset that is meant to be around £300. Another option maybe a ps4 vr headset which may be pc compatable.

The DK2 did me for a year or two. Scratched that VR itch.
I'd recommend it for a nice easy way into VR. Doesn't stress the GPU as much as the Vive or Rift.

That reminds me...must put mine on ebay...it's sat in a box unloved at the minute.

I have the Dk2 at work, the screen door effect really bugs me in it after a while. looking forward to seeing what the CV1 and vive are like, definitely wouldn't pay for the dk2 knowing what it's like
