TheFolderSpy is a freeware application that monitors defined files and folders on your PC, but can also run a program when a change is detected in the specified folder.

TheFolderSpy is a super-lightweight program that monitors and alerts the user if files are changed, added or deleted within a folder. The small, portable program monitors every file in the folder, or can be filtered to monitor only certain types of files within it. TheFolderSpy also can execute or run a program when a change is detected within a file. (For instance, Ghacks suggests that when a temporary directory is changed, a temporary cleaner can be set to run automatically to clean the folder.)

Automatic Printer Switcher

Freeware utility Automatic Printer Switcher maps different default printers to different programs, so you can skip the step of switching to the printer you want every time you print from a different application.

The idea behind the app is pretty simple: Let's say you've got a laser printer that you generally print Word documents to, and a color printer where you generally send your photos for printing. Just map your programs to the printer you will more often than not use it with, and Automatic Printer Switcher will monitor active windows and swap the default printer depending on what application you're printing from.

M3U Dropper Creates Music Playlists From Local and Online Files

Windows only: M3U Dropper is a lightweight portable program that creates music playlists using songs from your music library or from online links without having to open up your media player.

Through file drag-and-drop, M3U Droppers adds songs stored on the computer without the need to open up a music player. (Through the preferences, though, a default music player can be set to play songs dropped into the program.) Likewise, by dragging a link from a browser into the program, M3U Dropper automatically adds an online song into the playlist.

What's nice about the program is that nearly all of the functions to organize songs can be done via hotkeys. My biggest quibble about the program is that other than dragging and dropping, there's no other way to add songs to M3U Dropper—but better that than the other way around. M3U Dropper is a free program for Windows only.

Found a new program off Lifehacker. It's free but not really useful, just pretty. :D

http://iographica.com/

Formerly known as MousePath it was made by Moscow designer Anatoly Zenkov to brighten up the routine work. Posting it at Flickr caused informal interest and afterward Anatoly Zenkov and his colleague Andrey Shipilov decided to evolve the app.

IOGraph — is an application that turns mouse movements into a modern art. The idea is that you just run it and do your usual day stuff at the computer. Go back to IOGraph after a while and grab a nice picture of what you’ve done!

Interesting. Although I can see people getting no work done while they mess around seeing how their new picture changes if they wiggle the mouse here and click there while dragging back down..there.. HAH! a BLOB!

:D

As an aside I have a request to make of the list - get rid of most of the items on it! No point having 20 different AVs when only 2 or 3 are even worth a mention. Same goes for the other sections.

The title is Useful Freeware Utilities not All Freeware Utilities!

/moan :p

Every utility in the list is "Useful," the ones that are particularly good (and would be used the most) are highlighted in BOLD ... thus, both the popular and obscure needs are catered for...

Only for Windows 7.

http://lifehacker.com/5557519/windows-7-folder-background-changer-adds-flair-to-windows-explorer

Windows 7 only: Freeware utility Windows 7 Folder Background Changer adds a background image to Windows Explorer, and even allows you to customize each folder with a separate picture.

Once you've downloaded and extracted the no-installation-required application, you'll probably find that you need to right-click and choose "Open as Administrator" the first time you launch the application, but otherwise it's fairly straightforward to use—just choose a folder to customize, pick the background image and the other settings, and then close and re-open the Windows Explorer window to see the changes.

It's not really going to help you get more work done, but if staring at a white background is getting old, it might be nice to have a better looking workspace, at least. Windows 7 Folder Background Changer is a free download, works on Windows 7 only.

http://www.pekspro.com/english/pir.html

Windows only: Pir is a lightweight Windows application that creates text lists of folders and directories for exporting—handy for quickly sending a friend lists of your music collection or ripped movies.

The small application, which requires no installation, is a quick solution for providing others to the contents of your folders or saving a list of folders for some other reason. If you've got friends asking what's in your massive media collection, instead of providing a cumbersome explanation, Pir makes it simple.

The program exports lists to RTF, TXT and CSV format. Pir is a free program for Windows only.

I might really actually use this! At work I have to update laptops for the teachers and some of the laptops are quite fussy about taking Windows Updates. I get around this by downloading all the updates from Microsoft's site and creating a batch file that runs each installer update in turn silently and passively. I'm trying to save time so that I can mimic the real Windows Update automated process as much as possible. I download the updates into a special "Windows Update", sponsored by Ronseal, folder and then open a command prompt and navigate to the download folder and export the list of the files to a text file where I then have to append each file name with the necessary flags to make the installers run silently and not to restart the PC after each update install.

Pretty nifty so it is...
