Perhaps this could be a sticky in the monitors forum because finding this information has been a long slog for me as it's not totally obvious what to search for!

Basically I was trying to move away from a 3 monitor setup to a single 21:9, but part of the problem for me was the lack of window management built into Windows 8.

It turns out what I was looking for was a Tiling Window Manager (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiling_window_manager)

This may be obvious to some people but see trying to find the appropriate results when you search for "windows manager" or "snap windows to grid" or any other combination - the results just aren't what you're looking for.

Anyway, of all the ones listed in that Wikipedia article and what I could find through google, the one I found eventually that seemed to tick all the boxes is MaxTo.

For working with a 21:9 monitor this just seems like a complete no brainier (I personally think I'd split it in 4 vertically) and with a regular 4K monitor I think a 2by2 grid would make sense.

The other part I've yet to answer is monitor calibration. No doubt some of you guys with have sensible suggestions but I'm still waiting on my "X-Rite ColorMunki Display" to arrive that appears to be recommended everywhere. I can't comment myself (yet) but this looks like the most cost effective option for calibrating your monitor, and for high end monitors seems like a worthwhile investment.
