Scothall Hampshire have introduced a scheme whereby if your car is an 02 plate or older (ie, 6 years old), you get 50% off labour costs, 10% off parts and 30% off fluids for all servicing and repair work.

This takes their labour rate down to £60 an hour - which for a BMW Main Dealer is absolutely excellent.

So there we go - get your BMW repaired or serviced at a main dealer for backstreet garage prices.

I used to get a similar deal from the Honda dealer in Plymouth, that's why my civic always went there.

Those prices really aren't going to be that different from a good independant, which is really impressive.

That's a steal, my local BMWs charge 80 odd with four plus discount.

The only downside I can see is that they charge a lot of money for more simple jobs, I had a metal bracket that was connecting the transmission to something or other that had snapped clean in half and was rattling around, I got it fixed for a tenner, the bracket came off and was welded back together.

The BMW garage would probbbaly want £10 for the part and £60 or something daft like that for labour, and they would keep the car overnight as they won't have the part.

Yeah sounds great....that is unless they try and tell you your car needs all sorts of unnecessary work...

That applies to any garage, not just main dealers though. I've had far more dodgy service from indepedant garages than I've ever had from main dealers.

We've obviously had different experiences of main dealers and independents then ;)

Even then, if a independent garage does unnecessary work, they may use parts that people like unipart make.

A main dealer will always use it's own parts, which, in most instances are nothing short of daylight robbery.

I've actually found BMW Genuine parts to be quite reasonable and I've never had them try and rinse me for work - even when I've given them the opportunity and said 'Let me know if you find anything that needs doing'.

Plus the showroom is nice and you get coffee and everything. And an 08 320d to hoon.

Indeed, one part, the bulb housing on the high level brake light, I expected to cost a fiver or so, it was actually just over £1!

I think only the big parts are expensive like gearboxes, turbos and even brakes because some people can rebuild them for less or you can get the same item without the BMW badge on for less.

That sounds fantastic!

I've got an Inspection II coming up soon and that scheme, combined with supplying my own oil, should lower the cost quite a bit as I swear my local dealer, while good, still charges be upwards of £100/hr!

I've even got a Scothall sticker on my back windscreen - they simply cannot refuse! :p

£265 for Inspection II. You get a discount on the oil.
Is that they apply the discount to the price of the oil, too? I'd still prefer to supply my own, and at £47 for 8L (so a nice 1.5L spare for topups) I reckon it'll be cheaper even still. Either way £265 is a very good price. I was reckoning on more like £400 :p

Shame about the 220 mile round trip, though that's only £35 to do...

Is there a particular name to this scheme, or are they applying it automatically?

Edit: I just gave Scothall a call, and while the service rep couldn't give me an exact price (he couldn't get his computer to work), armed with a calculator he said he couldn't "see it being more than... £250 including VAT" :D

Result! Fox rules! :p

Yea when I called them their computers were down so I'm waiting for a call tommorrow about replacing my heater blower.

Best price so far is my local BMW dealer @ £329.

I'm gonna ring my local dealer and see if they can match Scothall's price. If they can't, I think I'm going to book way in advance (about 1500mi / 10% to go), drop it off a Friday afternoon in June, and get myself a nice 5 series automatic as a courtesy car for the weekend!
