Useful tip for those running on veg oil ...

I've read that the PD engines are OK on biodiesel/veg oil, but they need a separate tank - it will kill the lift pump in the standard tank.

There are companies who make kits which operate much like an LPG conversion with a switch between the 2 fuels

How do you check what sort of pump a car has without poking around? Dad has a 54 plate Fiesta 1.4TDI LX jobby that he does a fair few miles in, I'm sure he wouldn't mind an experiment.

Having the right fuel pump is ESSENTIAL. If you've got a mechanical Bosch (or Bosch copy Zexel, etc) fine, if you've got a mechanical Lucas, Rotodiesel, etc or a modern common rail system, run for the hills.
Mechanical Lucas in a Pug XUD engine here, could I get away with a 50/50 mix as it's summer? :D

Looks like the offer has finished, whats the next cheapest way of getting Veg Oil? Thinking of running my Rover 220 on it for the 2 months before it gets scrapped

So they scrapped duty payments for low volume home users. If you're a business, you pay the duty, if you use over 2,500l/12months you pay the duty (on ALL the fuel, not just the 2,500+), if you sell the fuel, you pay the duty. If you're an individual with no commercial interest, you don't. win :)

How on earth do they know if you're using it for chips or your car though?

They don't its down to you to declare, in some instances they may ask for proof you have been buying diesel for your car for the mileage it has covered since the last MOT reading.

So if, as a result of this thread, I go down to Tescos this weekend and find the shelves have been cleared of veg oil, can I fry my chips in Diesel instead?

Do you only fry your chips in the cheapest possible oil they have? Or can you use one of the others from their selection of 15-20 oils?

Or did you not know the offer ended a week ago .... ;)
