hi guys is it possible ?.
to basically use it to back up pics to an external drive (ideally) or if not to other cards
the card format the pics would be on is sd if that matters.
and if it is possible would it be silly slow ?

Not sure exactly what you're asking. You have pics on some device that you want to back up onto your tablet? Or you have pictures on your tablet you want to back up somewhere else?

neither :D
sd card from camera with pics on
can I use a tablet to make a back up to an external hard drive or to another memory card .basically the tablet(instead of a laptop when traveling) being a transfer device between storage mediums

So... let me get this straight, you take pictures with a camera, then move it to the tablet? And then when you can use your external HDD you then use move the pictures to there?

It's possible, you need a tablet with OTG support. You then need a micro USB to SD card reader as nearly all tablets don't have SD card support (just micro SD), and an OTG cable to connect the tablet to the external HDD.

EDIT: Scrap that, here's a better idea. Get a micro SD card with an SD card adapter, then that avoids the need of an SD card reader as you can insert the SD card straight into both devices.

cheers mate :D
so otg cables work on tablets in both directions then (read/write?).I don't think the micro sd and adaptor will have fast enough read/write times for my camera .and I take it from your reply the only way would be be copy them to the tablet 1st? also will this work with raw files
thanks again

OTG cables can work in both directions.

You can get Class 10 micro SD cards which in theory, should match the speeds of normal SD cards.

You should be able to copy from the camera straight to the external HDD just fine without moving it to the tablet first, so just like a PC.

It should work with any files.

I take it a nexus7/10 is about the best bet

With the Nexus 7 and 10 it doesn't have full OTG support on the software side, you need to either root them or use Nexus Media Importer to access the SD card via an SD card reader, and to access the external HDD as well. They also don't have a micro SD port.

The Galaxy Note 8.0 might be a better choice (Note 10.1 doesn't use standard micro USB).
