Hi all,

I have never used usenet before and need some beginners tips!

I have purchased 25GB of bandwidth from astraweb and have downloaded GrabIt. I have connected to the secure EU server using port 563 so I assume that means it's using SSL. Pleased correct me if i'm wrong.

This is where I get stuck. How do I go about searching for files and downloading them?

Lets say for example I want to download CentOS. Can anybody talk me through doing this?

Many thanks to you all ;)

If you want to download CentOS go to centos.org. Yes some people do post linux distros to usenet, but it's easy enough to find fast mirrors and well seeded torrents via official sites.

Anything else such as sites and services that index usenet invariably lead to sources for warez, which will probably result in the thread being closed or deleted.

Go and read up on the NNTP protocol, and history. Should soon learn how it works. And theres loads of places for linux isos all over the net, with very high bandwidth.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was using CentOS as an example so I can search and download for other things on there.

I've had a quick look at the NNTP protocol but it just explains the network architecture and uses. Nothing tells me how to search and download things.

Typically the easiest way to find content is if someone has indexed it for you and provides an NZB File (Wiki) which basically tells your reader where to look. Have a look at that Wikipedia page and it really should be all you need.
