Usenet

I use NewsBin pro, again its a paid for newsreader but astraweb gives a discount. I need to find myself a better way to search for the NZBs, unfortunately its hard to ask for help on that as the mods seem to remove any threads that mention specific links to sites that allow searching for and downloading of NZBs. :(

I haven't tried it, but I've heard good things about NewsBin Pro with Internet Search :). No Mac version though :(.

Pirated movies but not software? Mmm. :p

Eh?

Does Mac have any sort of windows emulation software? I know that on ubuntu I have newsbin working perfectly fine through WINE (I use newsbin on my main win7 machine for some of my more hands on usenet downloads, but anything I want automated I just put the .nzb into a autoloader folder on my ubuntu machine and newsbin automaticaly loads the .nzb, downloads, repairs, unrars and then places in a destination folder :))

This is hidden on the website...

SABNZBD does this on any platform as it's written in Python. It's the best Usenet client, hands down.

Do you get viruses a lot use UseNet?

Just like anything on the internet, if you download from trusted sources you should be fine, but there is no harm using a virus scanner just incase. Download from unknown users frequently and you will most likely get infected. Just like everything else, the best defense against malware is common sense.

Servers have whatever people have put on them. Only thing that matters is the retention period i.e. the number of days files will be held on servers before they're automatically deleted.

What's your ISP cheetah?

I ask because Virgin Media have free usenet access. You can experiment and work out how to use it without spending a penny.

So if I signup to Astraweb.....I will be using, searing and download from their server? Do they have specific software?

All Usenet servers are linked, so what gets put on 1 usenet server will eventully be transfered to all the others, regardless of provider. As for software, thats not specific to the provider you use. You could use something as simple as windows mail to connect to a usenet provider (although this is designed for text newsgroup, not downloading actual files).

Once connected the easiest way to download what you want is to use a website or client that allows you to search through usenet, and once you find what you want provides you with a .nzb file. This file is somewhat similar to a .torrent it that it mearly acts as a point which tells your client of choice the exactly location on usenet that all the pieces of the file you want are located. When dealing with .nzb files you don't have to realy care where the files are actully located on usenet, as your client will take care of all of that and can download everything required for you.

Valentino you need to be carefull, lots of threads have been removed in the past simply due to posting of those sort of things. I think its just due to the fact that they may be used to search for copyright material and OcUK doesn't like that.
