Hiya, just had a mate call me and say that his account has lost it's profile. He says that he can login as usual, but gets a mesg come up whilst logging in saying that it cannot find the profile. When he has logged in all his documents and link etc are all gone.

This is a new one to me, has anyone else expirenced this? if so is there anything that can be done?

Bit odd that his account is still there but with nothing in it....

This used to happen to users on our network when they had roaming profiles. If they had a file that had a pth length longer than 254 characters it caused issues when their profile was saved back to the server and when they nexted looged on it loaded them in using a new temp profile. They could still log in as themselves as their accounts were still defined on the AD server. The desktop would also load as a new one as all the desktop shortcuts would be saved undert he original profile of the user and not be loaded when the temp profile kicked in.

It could be that there is a file that your friend has in either temp, temp internet or my documents that may be causing issues when his profille is attempting to load which then causes windows to load him a temp profile instead of the saved one.

Under C:\ documents and settings your friend should have folder with his username and all of his correct profile settings i.e desktop / favourites / my documents etc should be there. Unless of course he has deleted it by mistake which would explain why his profile is lost

What you say about the file length makes sense, but i have a feeling that he said that there is no folder named as his user in documents & settings, just as if it has been deleted. Problem is, i know he is not that stupid to of deleted it.
