User could not log into Windows 7 laptop

Anyone else come across this?
Just had a user phone from another site.
Trying to login to Windows 7 on a laptop. Does CTRL-ALT-DEL and clicks on his username.
Enters password then it just reverts back to the username icons. No error message.
Tried safemode and another user login with the same thing.

I am not ruling out a user problem but he completely powered off laptop and removed battery for 10-15secs and now it logs in without issue.

Is the laptop part of a domain? Might not of connected properly, hence a reboot fixed it. Although doesnt answer as to why it didnt give any kind of error.

Boot from the Windows 7 disk and perform a system restore.
