the family pc died, so following an upgrade im left with 2 free drives. an 8 gig and a 30 gig

im thinking of a linux drive and a vista...

are there any other uses?

which OS on which drive?

which linux? (needs to be easy) iv heard good things about ubuntu

where can i get the latest vista client

any comments on linux?

also, i have 2 sata drives on my pc atm, when i install the other 2 ide drives with the 2 OS's they will both be slave drives, so how do i boot from either of them?

Just tried it myself, I think it would help if a mate who knows Linux is with you, at least during initial hardware & software setup.

It's a bit of a "nerdy" OS to setup. Once everything is setup though it's just like Windows to use.

set the drive you want to boot from as no.1 in your bios

say

drive1 - osx
drive2 - xp
drive3 - vista

to boot xp you put it at the top of the list of drives.

as for linux

freebsd
slax - kill bill
ubuntu
fedora core

are the best in my book

If you want an easy to setup version of linux go for Ubuntu, its based on debaian and in my opinion it was easier than any version of windows to setup.

I tried Ubuntu and found it quite good. However since I use an X-Fi card ther are no drivers. But if you have a different sound card then you should be able to use it just like windows if you know what I mean..

if you want to use flashy things like an xfi you can forget it, windows has the drivers, any other os is lucky to get drivers, windows is the big cheese so drivers are mainly written for it.
If its not supported out the box chances are you wont find drivers.

I learned the hard way with linux now i just use it for general dos'ing about.
