just completed my core duo build except for waiting on a 20 to 24 pin power adaptor to be sent in the post - annoying. But now that i have built a pc that will do everything i need and a whole lot more -

i am still left with some components e.g psu,agp card, hd etc which are not worth the trouble of selling on the bay (if indeed anyone would buy!), but with about 40-50 quid i could build a decent little amd system to rig up to my old crt.

The question is what useful thing could this be used for?? I have no idea, but seems a shame to waste

I'm sure lots of people must be in a similar situation - so any suggestions?

Plenty of uses for 'old' equipment:

home file server,
mythTV server,
folding@home, or SETI, or other project like that (might be slow, mind),
try out another OS, like Linux,
hardware firewall box, i.e., SmoothWall, etc.

I'm sure there are more, but those are just off the top of me head.

if you find the uses bove unusefull: Send it to some poor country or give it to one of your mates or family...

I always send my old pc's to my family in poland they're very happy with it (im living in the netherlands myself).

The parts will probably have more value to you as a second pc than you'd get for selling them.
I recently upgraded/built a second pc, I now have a nice Conroe system for doing serious uni work (modeling/rendering) that I'll keep free of junk. Aswell as a pc made from old bits that I now use as a tv, stereo, websurfer, file downloader. To be honest I currently use my "old pc" much more than my new one since it does so much but that should change now my final year of Uni has started.

I quite often find myself with a second pc just lying around doing nothing, never found any reason to hold onto it so just flog it off.

I tend to keep a 2nd machine around just in case I have anyone round that fancies a multiplay game. By the time it becomes the 3rd or 4th machine its to old to play modern games so i end up giving them away to anyone that wants it . PC developers never really got there head around offering 2 player games on one machine so a games console is still very usefull for when you have a few more people round ;) .

Same here.

If I want to try a different OS I'll use vmware or go native with dual boot if I need it to be peformant.

Selling stuff is so much effort though! I'm too lazy, which is probably why I have all my upgrades since my P2 300. I need to pay someone to sell all my stuff for me. Where's my brother...?

Well guess you obviosuly dont play mmorpgs but when I used to go a little crazy I would use a 2nd pc to run a 2nd account, that way I could sell stuff while xp'ing or just duo 2 toons together.

Connect it to your TV (if you can) and fill the HDD with movies and games.

Just a thought :D

I'll get me coat.
