I was in the US recently and used privateinternetaccess which I paid a monthly subscription around £6. It was immensely useful and I was able to watch iplayer and skygo on both my laptop and ipad.

When I logged in to my account there is an offer to upgrade to an annual subscription for £20 for the entire year. I travel a lot with work so paying the £20 might be worthwhile anyway, but I was wondering what other benefits a VPN might have for me when I am back at home?

It help with privacy over the internet, but can trade off speed at times... personally back home I cant think of anything apart from privacy for a VPN tunnel.

The name makes the main purpose of them clear - providing a secure connection to private network (e.g. work LAN) across a public one (e.g. internet).

Other than that they're also handy for deterring snoopers in untrusted networks (public hotspots etc.), but only if you trust the VPN provider. Incidentally this is why I set up my own VPN server recently in my home LAN (using strongswan on debian if anyone's curious).
