NFC will soon be standard on phones I think, tags themselves can be bought for only £5.50 for 5, so how can they be used?

At present I have two by my front door, coming home and leaving. Set to turn WiFi off and set to vibrate as I leave, do the reverse as I come home.

I have one at work that does similar and will put one on my car holder to turn WiFi off, Bluetooth on and open the car app.

(I bought NFC Task Launcher so I could write the tags)

What I'm wondering, are there any other clever uses of NFC tags?

As it's close range, I don't think it uses a lot of power. I have it on and still get 16 hours on my One X.

Maybe I can link it with Fing to wake my PC on LAN! Now that'd be cool at work!!!

Interesting idea. You can patch Tasker into NFC Task Launcher I think, but I never figured out Tasker :( Let us know if you can do it. I would love to add this to my 'arrive home' NFC tag :)

Do you actually need to tap the tags for it to work? Or does it work say from a couple of meters?

You have to be pretty close to them, tbh I would have security concerns if it was a meter or so.

These are the Sony ones, which didn't work like normal ones on my Nexus, but the idea is the same. You can see the distance needed :)

Tasker is VERY user friendly and intuitive, there's only a few basic concepts to understand.

It really isn't, unless it's changed in the last 6 to 8 months. Twice I've had a go at understanding it, twice I gave up. Now I'm no genius, but I can usually figure things out with a little fiddling... not Tasker.

If you have a good tutorial (which in itself, might suggest it's not that user friendly) please post a link. I know some people that say it's the best thing since sliced bread, but also a LOT of people that just can't get their heads round it.

But yeah that is true about the "background" scanning, although can't say that my battery life has been impacted hugely by leaving wifi on when out and about.

It seems to be much better now, but this used to be a huge drain, WiFi not connected means it's constantly looking for something to connect to, big drain.

I'm giving Tasker another go... and once again it's driving me crazy.

I've set a profile of Headset being plugged in. It should open and menu and set media volume to 14. I can see it detects the headphone, the profile goes green, but it doesn't carry out the tasks in the right hand side :( Why!?!!?

**EDIT** Nevermind, it's working now :o

Am I missing something obvious? I've set a tag up on my Brodit car holder, changes all sorts including screen timeout to 10 minutes. Is there a simple way to undo it all when I exit the car, or should I set another tag up, put it on the door or something, to put everything back?
