so for xmas im gonna buy ram (seeming as its soo cheap), ive got 1333mhz at the moment but i was thinking on getting 1600mhz, but would it work with 1333mhz? are they compatible? thankyou
Firstly what is the brand/model of your existing memory and motherboard and will your future q8400 be overclocked?
You can buy the 1600MHz but you would need to run it at 1333Mhz to match you existing set (this includes the voltage and timings). Plus your MB may not be able to run/support 1600Mhz memory...
Ideally you would try and match the existing memory - or better still, if your motherboard get take 4Gb strips, sell your existing kit and buy a 2 x 4Gb set. This option is the ideal if you plan on clocking your q8400.
You can run mixed memory alongside each other, providing you are prepared to over/underclock one of the sets, best option is probably to try and run at the higher rated speed, tweaking timings if necessary.
Different buses, 1333 memory has nothing to do with the 1333fsb/333Mhz of an E6850. Your 1066mhz memory will run as such (1066/533Mhz) with an E6850.
Not so sure about DDR3 and Core 2s but if CinderzFTW says 1333MHz is the max mem speed they support then if you bought the 1600MHz ram it would only operate at 1333 anyhow. What board do you have?
