Using 2 wireless routers to connect xbox to internet

Had an idea as I've got an old router lying around.. would I be able to connect to Live on my xbox 360 via this kind of layout:

My normal Wireless Router (Actiontec GT701-WG) > Netgear WG602 v2 > Xbox

I was wondering if there's some sort of special mode that the Netgear one can use to output a internet connection via ethernet instead of it being an input.. but I don't know a lot about routers; is it possible?

Reason being that I don't have a ethernet cable long enough to wire it around the room instead of directly across it and I had this old router lying around. Also got another if that helps - Linksys WAP54G. (Wow looking at the model number that must be a very early model!)

yes it will work as long as you have the neccessary ports open on both routers. its not much different from ics.

Is it a router, or just an access point? With a router, it will work. With an access point, it might just about be possible, but I doubt it.

Hmm. The WG602 is just an access point. If you can figure out a way to do it, I'll be impressed.

the only reason for it not to work would be if ports were blocked - and I know access points dont block ports so there would be no problem.

How would you do it though? A wireless access point is designed to accept wireless signals and give upstream access to a wired signal. I'm not sure how you'd rig it do that backwards. The wireless access point will get all confused trying to get an address out of the XBox and the XBox will sit there wondering what it's supposed to be doing with a wired connection that won't do anything. It might work if you can do some bridging jiggery pokery, but I don't know...

The manual is here. It looks like bridging is the thing you want, but the manual says that the WG602v2 can only bridge with other WG602v2s, so I guess you're stuck. You can try what it says and see if it works anyway, it might be worth a shot.

It can be done as that's how I connect my 360 to the net but it can be a real bugger if you have different brands of router (like you do!). I tried connecting a Belkin wireless router and a Dlink WAP via WDS (the feature used to wirelessy interconnect access points) but couldn't get them to talk to either other.

It's still a real pain to setup even with two identical routers like mine. Took me an evening to work out what to do!

Yes it will work, I did it with my Xbox 1.

Set the 2nd point to repeater mode or client mode (even try bridged mode if it dont work).
Ensure any mac filtering settings are valid/off.
Set the 2nd points gateway IP address to point to the main routers ip address.
Ensure DHCP is off on the 2nd AP.

Read this and try to find the similar settings to your own secondary AP's firmware.

my home network has 3 routers connected at the moment (every time I upgrade my main router I keep the old ones just in case my network expands, which it has done)

Basically you want one router to perform all your DHCP tasks and connect to the internet, everything else should have DHCP disabled and if the option is available, be set in bridge mode.

The Routers need to be within the same subnet mask and IP range (ie all on 192.168.0.*
Where * is between 1 - 255)

Also it is worth setting the starting number of the DHCP 10 higher than the routers use. (so that there are never any IP conflicts)

Thanks for all the replies.. turns out that I was able to plug the Xbox into an unused NIC in the PC (which is on wireless) and bridge the two connections instead.

Haven't tried it online yet to test out any lag issues so might be coming back to this thread to bridge the router instead. Thanks again

If I see one more person 'bridge' the connections I will scream. You do not need to do that.

So what do I need to do? At the moment, everytime I turn the Xbox on, it tells me theres an IP conflict on the system.. but everything seems to work fine.
