Setting up 3g/hdspa on iphone

My Iphone arrived today and I am going to be using my Simplicity SIM in it. I was unable to send receive picture messages or connect to the 3G network. After looking on the O2 website there was a guide to changing settings, which I followed.
I can now send picture messages but still unable to use the 3G network to connect to the internet. Before I had a 3G icon in the top left of the phone but it’s now disappeared?
Can any of you help?
