Using a 15m USB extension cable to power a USB bluetooth... do I need an "active" one?

Long story short, I bought this 15m USB extension cable to put a USB bluetooth received on the end and provide mouse and keyboard and gamepad signal from my PC into my living room. https://www.digitus.info/en/product...components-and-accessories/extender/da-73101/

This is the blurb from the website:

When I attached the USB bluetooth receiver to one end and then put the other in my PC (I did it as instructed as there was a specific end for the PC), there was no power or detection of the USB receiver. I tried multiple ports, same result.

Am I right in assuming that this is because I need an "active" one that transmits power down the long 15m cable? Would I need this one instead?

I honestly didn't think I would need that for a USB bluetooth receiver so didn't it take it into account when I ordered. Advice appreciated please, thanks in advance. :)

You might get away with a thicker cable, I had issues with my External DVD Writer ripping CD's no working on the long cable extension for Logitech receivers.

Bought uGreen USB extension cables and fine now but only about 3m so not sure if 15m is beyond the limit of non active.

15m is a long way to send 5V power unless the cable is really thick. You might try using a powered hub on the device end. Then again, the instructions say
computer will automatic defect the USB device
So if it doesn't work, then it's working as specified!

LOL thanks guys. The good thing is that the place I bought it from have refunded me and I don't even have to send it back, so no harm done I guess. I will look at other cable alternatives. :)

It a device expects voltage to be within spec you can get away with about 350-450mV drop over the cable assuming the initial output level is close to 5V - so around 5-7m or so cable length depending on quality.

Hmm thanks Roff, I guess I need minimum 10m to get it around my bedroom wall and to the hole through to my other room.

Might be doable if the output is around 5.2v on the hub/port and you have a decent gauge cable.

Looks like you need an active cable to boost the signal on the data lines for anything over ~5m depending on cable quality as well.

EDIT: Have you tried just using the Bluetooth - it is a bit hit and miss but I've got surprising distancing working with it before - my old house I could go downstairs and still be connected to my PC in testing.

EDIT: Not sure about signal quality over that distance though on the data line.

Makes sense thanks Rroff... I shall look for an active one that gets me a strong bluetooth signal through to my living room. :)

I edited my post a bit - have you tried with just the Bluetooth for range?

Another option would be USB over Cat5/6 extender - these come both as straight up sending over Cat 5/6 and over IP variants.

My PC is in my bedroom, connected with a 15m HDMI cable to my OLED TV in my living room and I am trying to get a good signal for gamepad, keyboard and mouse into the room for some big screen gaming. I currently have my motherboard providing bluetooth, which with the external antennae attached, sends an adequate PS5 gamepad signal/latency to my living room. However, I also have a logitech keyboard and mouse attached to a Logitech unifying dongle and they do not get a decent signal from the PC to the living room. So I want to run a USB cable through to my living room and put a receiver on the end so that the signals are strong enough.

I will look into the USB over Cat5/6 extender... didn't even know that was possible!
