Is it possible to setup a broadband account for use at one place (week residence) and then take the modem and use it at another location (weekend residence)?

The account will only be accessed from one location at a time.

Presumably if you used the same supplier at both locations, one for say £10 per month and the other with a premium account for £22 that should work right? Or is ADSL user account tied to the phone number as well?

If it's cable and you are in the same node area you should be able to move the modem over if both places have cable but it is a breach of T&C's and shouldn't be done without informing the cable co. *cough*

I remember a time when it wasn't

I believe Zen where one of the first ISP's with broadband ( I remember being one of their first bb customers quite a few years ago) and they certainly tied it to a specific tel number and exchange (possibly due to quality of service guarentee etc)

Just enquiring who you were with at the time and if you know how it was done

PS sorry for dragging this from the depths I was searching for something else at the time lol

If you're on the same exchange and both lines have the same realm, it used to work with some ISPs (because they didn't - and to a point don't - care what the line's number is).
The reason it most often won't work is because of Service Selection Barring - BT will only allow a set number of realms (ie the bit after the @ in your username) to work for a given line.

The ADSL is tied the phone number but if the ISP uses the BT network and provides an IStream product to you for the ADSL then you can get round this as the BT network does not fully authenticate the username it just looks for the domain part of the username so if your username was [email protected] the BT system only is interested in the @aol.com part and if your line is set up on the AOL domain it will then let you through to finish the authentication at AOL where they will check the full username and password. At the moment BT do not pass the CLI of the ADSL to the ISP so they are not able to tell where you are connecting from.

So if you had 2 AOL broadband accounts you could use either username at either location just also make sure you are not connected at both locations at the same time on one username as the ISP might reject one of the connections if they do not allow multiple connections on the same username.

I know a couple of people who do this and have a work connection that is unlimited and a home connection which is the cheapest possible and then when they finish work they disconnect and use the username for the unlimited account at home for evening downloads.

I've tried to connect using my username and password at a number of other places using the same ISP and package. Doesn't ever work.

Now that's tight!
