Using a dedicated server as a private VPN?

Anyone tried doing this? Seems simple enough with OpenVPN but any pitfalls?

I dont trust any other company with my browsing data, so it'll be nice to have my own private VPN.

unfortunately my home internet is not stable enough to use as a VPN So a VPS seems like a good idea, which one do you use?

I'd really like to have access to my NAS but as mentioned it doesnt really work. And putting TBs of data on a dedicated server running Owncloud is very expensive.
