If I were to pick up a NAS drive (such as one of the Freecom ethernet ones on here) would I be able to set it up in such a way that everyone on my network can connect to it and use it as a shared storage area, but would require a username and password?

The situation is that my family want to be able to use it, and see each other's files on there, but there is a lodger who we don't want to have access at all. (but obviously he still needs to be on the network as he uses internet via the same router as the rest of us)

You could, if you have the bits lying around, put together a small linux box t ofile share.
Total control and you can lock your lodger out then.

im sure most nas cases should offer a username and password option, if not get a usb one instead simply share it over the network on the pc thats switched on logest, and assign it a passwrod.

Password - You can certainly do this with the D-Link DNS-323. Been using one for a year with 2 x 500GBs
