Using a router as an AP

Hi,

The WiFi signal in parts of our house is terrible. I recently setup an old dlink router in AP mode and plugged it into our BT Hub.

We seem to be getting disconnected from the internet when connected to the new WiFi ever 30 mins. I have to manually disconnect us from the wireless network and reconnect to fix this.

Could this be because I've used a straight through cable instead of a crossover?

Cheers

30 minutes would be short for a DHCP issue.

It could be the refresh interval for the encryption. If you can, change the timer and see if the disconnect happens at the new interval. It'd also be worth temporarily trying different, or no, encryption.

There may be clues to what's happening in the windows event log.

I had a very similar problem when I connected my old D-link router to my VM superhub to act as an AP. I never bothered spending time trying to figure out a fix so still have poor wireless signal upstairs. If you manage to sort yours out post the fix please so I can sort mine too :p.

I wonder if this is a DHCP issue. You did remember to turn off the DHCP server on the AP, right?

Yup disabled DHCP.

Will try that and report back.

What dlink is it and do you have a modern android device connecting to it? I ask becaise I had the same issue with a dir-655 when I was connecting a galaxy s4 to it. Upgrading the firmware has solved the issue.

Using the DIR 615, was doing this with and without android devices connected.

I'm using a DIR-615 as an access point right now. Runs fantastically with my Virgin Superhub.

Before I was running it as a full on router with my Superhub in modem mode. Would get about 60Mb through the Ethernet and 40Mb over WiFi.

Disabling all the routing functions and just using it as an AP has sped up everything! Now getting very close to full 100Mb on the Ethernet ports and 75Mb/s over WiFi. Plus I get to use the Gigabit ports on the Superhub too.

I'm running DD-WRT on mine though. Seems to be doing a great job for now until I get a proper all round router and stick the Superhub back into modem mode.
