Using a switch with the Xbox One S - Matchmaking issues

Hi all,

Apologies if this is the wrong section!

My brother likes to play FIFA on the Xbox One S in the living room.

When connecting to the router through a switch (I've tried two different netgear switches and an access point with Open-WRT on it), he cannot find a game in ultimate team.

As soon as we plug the cable that connects the router to the switch straight into the Xbox (connecting the xbox directly to the router), it will find games.

I cant see any reason why the switch would affect matchmaking!

Has anybody else run into similar issues at all? Or can anybody think why this might be happening?

Thanks in advance :)

The "ProSafe GS105E", and the "GS208".

What is also worth noting is that, originally behind the telly acting as an AP and a switch was the TP link router with Open-WRT, until we recognised the Xbox didn't work with it.

I swapped it out for the prosafe and didn't seem to have any issues for a little while until this weekend when I connected a homeplug to that switch with the same TP link router attached to the homeplug on the other end. It just completely stopped working again.

However, now even with the homeplug disconnected from the switch, the Xbox doesn't like it again.

I've drawn up a crude network diagram for my home. I know it's a bit convoluted and there can be simplifications made, but it's done by using various bits and bobs that I have managed to get mostly for free.

Hopefully this helps

Personally, I would ditch all powerline and old routers.

Use switches and dedicated access points, with hard wired ethernet.

Personally, I would try and resolve the problem instead of throwing money at it.

DHCP turned off on all the old routers? Does the IP address change when you change what the Xbox is plugged in to?

Unplug the TP-Link routers for now and maybe even the powerline adapter, does the xbox work when it's the only device plugged into the switch?

What's handing out the DHCP lease to the Xbox? Have you tried a static address and gateway?

The Draytek router is handing out the leases. I'll try using setting a static IP and setting the default gateway & DNS servers manually on the Xbox.

DHCP is completely turned off on all the old routers, but I will double check this. (The Huawei acting as the modem, and the two TP-Link's acting as APs)

I'll check this too when I get a chance.

I'll let you guys know what the results are :)

Just to be clear, the Xbox does connect to the EA servers (for Fifa), but it just will not find any matches online.

What do the network tests on the Xbox say? I just got a One S and had an issue with my NAT being reported as strict, adding the Xbox to the DMZ on my HomeHub 5 sorted the problem for me.

That's a good point actually!

Weirdly, what normally happens is the Xbox either says the NAT is Moderate or (and more occasionally) strict when we change anything with the network, then when we do the test, it pops back to Open again.

Sometimes when doing the test though, it randomly flicks between Open and Moderate...

I will try adding the Xbox to the DMZ when I configure the Xbox manually and let you know if it works!

I got it fixed, here’s what I did.

Checking that DHCP server is turned off on the two APs
When I looked at the configuration of the two APs, I had already checked the box on each to disable the DHCP server, however, I did come across another setting that seemed to allude to disabling the IPv6 DHCP server. I had assumed that checking the disable DHCP server would disable both the IPv4 and IPv6 servers, but maybe that is not the case. This would make sense as being the issue, seeing as the Xbox One supports IPv6, so perhaps it uses IPv6 when matchmaking. Also disabled IPv6 networking on the draytek router.

Adding Xbox to DMZ
I added the Xbox to the DMZ on the Draytek router, simple enough, not sure whether this was necessary after the above changes, but it did this just in case.

Full network reboot
I shut down all the network devices and turned them by one in a specific order. I kept the talktalk modem on. Booted the draytek router and turned on the switch in the living room. Made sure to unplug the other devices from the switch. Did a hard reboot of the Xbox and tried to find a game on Fifa and it was a success.

Then booted the access point under the stairs, could still find matches.
Plugged in the other devices into the switch by the telly, could still find matches.
Finally booted up the AP in the bedroom (initially what kicked all the problems off!), and could still find matches.

Have still been finding matches consistently over the past few days! Thanks for all the suggestions guys :)
