Using an external display with a MacBook Pro

I'm looking to purchase a unibody 15" MacBook Pro in the coming weeks but before I do I've got to be totally convinced that it's going to work in exactly the way I want it to. For the most part I think the transition will be relatively seamless (apart from a couple of potential software issues) but I need to be sure I can get my hardware to work properly too.

I've currently got a fantastically accurate 24" monitor that I use for my photography and design work and I need to know that it will work in conjunction with the MBP. I've heard various 'horror stories' about there being issues with the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter which render an external screen completely useless and the 'only way' to solve the problem was to buy the stupidly expensive Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter.

Has anyone experienced such an issue or know anything about it?

Exactly what you've done, Combat!

I've got a 2407 that I'll want to use in conjunction with the MBP but I've seen a number of situations where people have been connecting an external monitor via the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter with no problem and then, for some reason or other, it's just stopped working.

Fixes have varied wildly across the board but the most common one was to upgrade to the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. Apparently because that one is powered it's more capable of handling the strain, as it were.

But if you've got a 2407 connected to your MBP that's good enough for me. What are you using; DVI or VGA? And have you bothered with calibrating either screen?

Anyone here using a hardware calibration device in conjunction with their external screen? And if you are, is it nice and easy to run a profile for the MBP screen and the external screen side-by-side?
