hi

I think I've asked this before, but its it possible to use the imac as a monitor (either the white or the new metal one) without software - ie plug in another computer and turn it on rather than using any remote desktoping software.

Thanks

Nearly, mostly.

If you use a firewire cable, you can boot from any other firewire harddrive. If this drive is in another firewire equipped Mac, you just set it to Target Mode, it should work flawlessly.

So if you wanted to use it as a monitor for a Macbook... Target Mode the Macbook and connect. Of course it is still using the internals of the iMac except the HDD. SO not really what you want... but it might be close enough.

Just research 'Target Mode'

There is also a program that allows multi monitors over a network, but I cant remember the name of it off hand

EDIT

Yes I can, it is called synergy. Bascially extends your desktop across multiple monitors on multiple PCs/Macs/Linux Boxen with cut and paste support

sorry mate, but this is not what I want to do, I simple want to plug my win2k3 server in to the imac and use the display on the imac as a monitor... for time to time, rather that having to fire up another machine to remote desktop in...

Why dont you just use a mac remote desktop client? I use this on my MBP to my 2003 server fine.

Thanks, but again I do not want to switch on another machine just to admin my server which is on all the time.. as I am doing this at the moment. as orginally posted; no remote desktop software.

I would assume from the follow up that I can't just plug in a DVI/VGA cable from my server and use it as a monitor.. looks like I'm getting a mac mini and two tfts..
