Hi

I want to buy an Ipad that I want to use for SatNav in my Mercedes Sprinter Van. I have plenty of room to set up the iPad and am not concerned about the size. What I want know is what to get?

  • I think the Ipad 2 3G comes with GPS receiver built in so is it just that simple to buy the Ipad 2 and then some software.

  • Do I need to take out a subscription to a mobile phone company as well to get it to work.

  • Can I buy an external GPS receiver and connect it to the Ipad 1 or Ipad 2 wifi and achieve the same thing?

  • Does the Ipad 1 3G have a GPS receiver built in.

Has anyone else done this, any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

You can get A free sat nav software that works fine, the hardest thing is how to mount it.

All 3G ipads has gps built in.

If you want 3G you don't need a contract. You can get pre paid Three 3G sim cards 3GB 3month limit. For around £12 from several online places.I would say I'm medium user and have come to the end of the three months and still have a little over 1GB left. So more than enough for most people and cheap with no contract.

There's a free sat nav called navfree it is very good, although camera database and iirc postcode look up costs about £2 each. This does not require 3G.
However if yu get an iPad I would strongly recommend to get 3G, it has a habit of using the. iPad more than you thought you would.
I'm pretty sure only 3G versions have gps.

Although you can get car mounts with gps which adds the function, how good they are I don't know. The tom-tom one is expensive anyway. So might as well go 3G IMO.

Thanks, that velcro idea is very interesting. I just priced up a RAM mount that would work and it came to £120!!!!. I've got an area where I can place the Ipad, just need to work out how to angle the ipad and then fix it with velcro -- simples;)

Cheers

If you buy a GPS app like Navigon, you don't need the 3G iPad.
Could well work out cheaper in the long run than a 3G sim card.

But then if you want to use the internet you'll need Wifi..
