Using another router with SKY SR102 modem/router

I have a friend who is struggling with a wireless signal using SKY (ADSL) and the the SR102 provided from Sky.

Long story short powerlines dont work upstairs, they drop out but downstairs they are fine, why this happens I dont know?

Anyway, I suggested using another router to try and improve the wireless signal, how do we go about doing this please, do we remove the SR102 all together or use another router piggy backed to it?

What router should we go for? all he wants is a strong signal, no thrills just solely for gaming really.

He will pay upto £120 for a router if required.

My networking knowledge is limited (virgin customer) so any help would be appreciated.

It is possible to use a Non-Sky Router with Sky but Sky themselves won't help you or provide any details. Loads of info on www.skyuser.co.uk about it and on here if you look back a few pages. Is he on standard DSL or Fibre?

If you have no problems with the router have you thought about just getting an access point? You could cable it up to the router and plonk it somewhere where the wireless starts to go bad or you could connect it up to some homeplugs rather than wired.

You can get an Ubiquiti UniFi N model for around £55 which you would connect to your sky router and do a simple configuration and then your done. I have heard they have very good ranges.

Although for gaming if your running the cable most of the way i would recommend running it the rest

As for another router option you will need one with a modem built in or you will continue to use your Sky router which will give you double NAT.

I could never get my DSL N55U to connect to sky DSL so thats just a warning for you because of how sky does their conections im not sure if its changed now though.
