What have people found to be the best encoding settings to strike a good balance between quality and small file size? I use vbr 64-160.

It depends on what you are playing the music on IMHO...

If it's PC Speakers, then 192~256kb/s is good.
If it's a stereo, then 320kb/s.
If you are going for small file size, I would say 192kb/s is the lowest I'd encode at.
Even then, usually just for headphones.

The difference really is noticable.
I would also use the LAME MP3 encoder with it.

(EAC is also a very good ripper)

LAME Alt Preset Standard (or V2 as it's now known), can't be beaten. In most tests it's considered "transparent" i.e. in blind tests people cannot tell the difference between an APS encoded mp3 and the originals. It's the best trade-off between file size and quality, without losing quality too!

I suggest you take a look at the Hydrogen Audio Wiki for more information. There's also a guide to setting up EAC & Lame in there too if you follow the link.
