I've had my laptop (Acer Aspire 3000) for a while - it's only been used as an easily-moveable utility computer and I rarely had a need to use it wirelessly.
Now my newer house is slightly more presentable and I didn't want to drape 40ft of network cable through the hallways, so I've tried to use a Netgear WG511 card to get onto the wlan that I set up. My two housemates use it to browse the web all evening, every day using their laptops and the rangemax versions of that laptop adaptor without incident. My normally-stable laptop, on the other hand, will lock-up after a few seconds of handling network traffic; I can plug the card in and the laptop will be fine so long as it doesn't attempt to deal with any traffic. I tried one of my housemate's cards with the same results. Recently I've also reformatted/installed the laptop and the same still happens.
More recently I've needed to use the laptop for work, developing wifi j2me<->j2se apps and have used the original netgear card to create an ad-hoc connection between the laptop and a mobile phone: the laptop has no problems with this.
Now I figured that for some reason the amount of traffic might be causing an issue - the amount of data sent over the ad-hoc connection is very very low and is handled fine, while the laptop crashes when trying to view web-pages on infrastructure. However this week I took my laptop to my parents' house and decided to try it on their wlan for the hell of it, and it works fine. I'm browsing this site, using VNC, etc. I set both lans up, and as far as I'm aware did it in the same way. Is there a reason why particular wlans would crash my laptop?
