Using DisplayPort for 1440p monitor, but audio over HDMI

Currently I have a 1080p TV hooked up to my PC using an AV amplifier. The AV amp only supports HDMI resolutions up to 1080p, and I'm thinking of replacing the TV with a higher res monitor (1440p).

Can I run the 1440p monitor direct using DisplayPort, but use the HDMI audio from my Nvidia card? I'm just worried that the amp won't recognise it as an audio source, and my computer might see the amp as a second monitor?

Or am I better off ditching the HDMI connection to the amp completely and just using regular a coax audio cable from my soundcard to the amp?

Based on my own experiences, you are best using coax or optical because as you mentioned the computer will see the HDMI connection via the amp as another monitor.

Even if your PC sees your amp as a secondary display, it'll still work for audio even if it's set as a secondary display, you'll just need to make sure it's set as the primary audio out.
