Hi all, I’m thinking about buying an e-bike for commuting and the place of work has a covered bike shelter near the main entrance and I’m thinking it looks secure but what would be the best lock to leave it all day?

How much are you willing to spend? This is a area where the more invested does typically have greater returns in difficulty to remove by force.

Hiplock D1000 and Squire D16 MAX were the best ones they tested. Hiplock gold superbright punched above its price category.

My Kryptonite New York didn't hold up as well as I'd have hoped, but those 2 D locks above cost more then the bike I use it on.

Guessing it's quicker to cut through the metal that the bike is locked to.

Where is work?

Yes, it's only as secure as what it's locked to. Unfortunately e-bikes are very desirable to thieves and they can be shameless in their theft attempts.

A small college where? i.e. what is local crime rate like?

How much will this e-bike be worth?

If it's high crime rate and an expensive bike, I'd think about a cheaper normal bike, and get more exercise, as the theft risk won't be worth it.

There is not a single lock on the market that will prevent your bike being stolen.

What is as important as anything else is where your bike is being locked. I've got a lock that cost me about £100 or so, Abus Granit X-Plus 540. It was regarded as probably the best lock on the market when I bought it. You can still cut through it with an angle grinder in a couple of minutes.

I won't leave my bike locked in certain places as it won't last. There are gangs that specialise in bike thefts and they cruise around looking for bikes to nick. In general I only take my bike to places where I can bring it inside.

Probably one of these:

First review on Google suggests its better but both are very similar:

Get a cheap second hand bike and buy a Swytch conversion kit. Then use a good mid range D lock to lock the frame and drive wheel to an immovable object. You can detach the battery and charge it at work ready for the return journey.

Apparently you can also unlock the EU speed setting to give you 18mph rather thank the UK 15.5mph limit, but I haven't tried this.

I love my Swytch bike. I had an old hybrid in the garage that had not been ridden for years. After doing the Switch conversation it's had a new lease of life.

It's now my most used bike and I have five bikes :)
