Hi all,

I'm building a budget PC for my Dad and he currently has a laptop with Windows XP pro installed. I was wondering if it is possible to use this copy of XP on his new pc, which would save him buying another copy? XP Pro came bundled with his laptop so no CD's for installation. But the code is underneath the laptop.

Any advice would be great,

Thanks,

RoEy

Thought so.

Thanks anyway.

Its a murky one, I wouldn't really call this outright piracy.

I'm pretty sure 9 out of 10 people would do what you have in mind without feeling guilty if you're OEM key is legit.

I recently purchased a Vista OEM key from a friend, he can't stand the sight of Vista so I bought it off him.

Anyway. This sort of thread has been done to death all over the net, its a personal choice at the end of the day. Whatever choice you take best to keep it to yourself :)

I've done this so many times with the OSs that came with numerous iterations of Dell computers in this house that I can barely remember which CD belongs to which computer. I'm currently using XP Media Center with my PC, the CD came from my Dad's new computer, a Dell, and I just used the code on the case. Both computers have the same OS and both use the same code and there are absolutely no issues at all.

I've had to ring microsoft a few times though to get new codes from having used the CDs to install windows though.

Edit: Not that I'm condoning piracy or anything but if it works, it works...

You do realise that you're not properly licensed as the COA must be attached to the case?

Thanks for you advice people. I'm not going to take the risk as it's for my dad so I don't want any come backs. I'm just buying it off Overclockers.

Thanks,

RoEy

Your last sentance makes no real sense.
You don't condone piracy however you are pleased to operate completely outside of the license agreement which is no better than piracy with the majority of your machines no more legal than if they were running a downloaded OS.

Don't try and grey area it.
Either you pirate or you don't.
