My mother in her infinite wisdom has decided she wants to go wireless so she can use her new laptop in the kitchen. Of course she needs a wireless router but she can't plug the router directly into the main telephone socket. Will she be ok using an extension or will this not work?

Depends on the length (ohh-err missus :)) and quality of the extension cable

Why if it's wireless access you want can't it be plugged in close to the actual telephone socket?

No power source to plug the router into where the telephone socket is. My parent's place is laid out funny, it has a really long narrow hallway without any power outlets and the main telephone socket is up at the far end of it.

Well you don't have much of a choice except to try it. Thing you could try is temporarily run power to the telephone socket, plug in the router and record it's stats (connection speed, SNR, Line attentuation) then plug the router in via the extension cable and see if things change much.
