Using external HDD as boot drive

Hey guys,

Last night the hard drive on my coreduo macbook went. When I tried to boot it I just got a flashing folder with a '?' and it wouldn't boot. I have just reinstalled osx on to a external USB drive which seems to be working. Is it ok to use this as my only drive for my macbook? If I can then I won't need to buy a replacement internal hard drive.

Any advice appreciated.

What type of HDD do I need to look for? Are all 2.5" HDD the same?

Thinking of getting a Western Digital WD3200BEVT 320GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache.
